Provide in-person classes in the Fall 2020 Semester for FSU International Students
On July 6th, 2020, the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency announced sweeping measures to limit the academic ability and success of international students studying in the United States. The measures mean international students taking a full roster of online classes will not be allowed to remain in the United States if already there, or will not be permitted into the country if trying to return.
Demand FSU Allow Remote Workers To Perform Childcare Responsibilities
Not allowing our university staff and faculty to care for their children while work continues remotely is an unnecessary cruelty towards families already struggling to balance a new schedule of working at home while caring for young children who are now left without the common childcare options such as school, summer camp, and many daycare options.
Mandate Comprehensive Sex Ed in Florida Public Schools and Universities
The Florida State Legislature needs to require comprehensive sex education programs in public high schools and universities. In 2015, 24.1% of 9th graders and 33.2% of 10th graders reported ever having sex according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. These students are vastly unprepared on how to have safe sex due to a lack of education or only being provided abstinence only education which has been proven by research to be ineffective.
Demand That FSU separate FSUPD from TallyPD and establish an oversight committee
How can our students at FSU feel safe when the FSU PD is a division of the negligent and dangerous Tallahassee PD? Therefore, we propose that FSUPD separate from Tallahassee PD and exist as its own entity with its own jurisdiction. However, this version of FSUPD would not be without oversight. We are also proposing the establishment of an Independent Oversight Committee made up of faculty appointments and elected student representatives. This committee would be required to be made up of a certain percentage of non-white members. The committee would be able to investigate and hand down disciplinary measures in the event of officer misconduct, as we believe that the police cannot remain unbiased in an investigation of themselves.
Ahmad Daraldik, the current FSU Senate President, made anti-semitic remarks in multiple social media posts. These posts were exposed right after the previous president was removed from his position for transphobic remarks. Eldeek says, “Fuck Israel” “Stupid Jews” and compares the Israeli government to Nazi Germany’s genocide on the jews. These anti-semitic remarks are not welcomed on FSU’s campus, in the United States, and most importantly, on this EARTH! There is no justification for his remarks, and needs to be removed from his position of power.
Removal of Francis Eppes statue & renaming Eppes Hall for civil rights leader C.K. Steele
After the murder of George Floyd, University President Thrasher stated, "I am listening, and my administration is committed to making long-term, sustainable changes to ensure that FSU and the Tallahassee community is a place where every single person is treated with respect and dignity and feels safe."
This is an opportunity for President Thrasher and the University administration to make good on its commitment to long-term change in our community.
Jack Denton, the current FSU Senate President, made transphobic and racist remarks in a Group-Me chat in the wake of the murder of Tony McDade. Transphobic and racist behavior and comments will not be tolerated in any form at any level at FSU.
Removal of Florida State University Francis Eppes Statue
This statue continues to be a stain on the beautiful Florida State campus and any student who stands by remains a silent oppressor in the fight against white washed history. It’s time to give credit where it’s due and that is to the slaves that built FSU not the slavers. I urge everyone who sees this petition to think of the diverse community FSU tries to foster and consider the feelings of our BIPOC and minority peers who must walk by this statue everyday that continues his legacy of oppression.
Require all FSU students to satisfy a Race/Ethnicity credit prior to graduation!
This petition is suggesting that we add a NEW REQUIRED CREDIT to the graduation checklist for ALL FSU STUDENTS regardless of course of study. Not only would this policy increase education and understanding among the FSU student body on the issues that Black Americans face in the United States every single day, but it would be an opportunity for the university to act as a role model for the community.
This pandemic has especially impacted us as international students who live thousands of miles away from home and loved ones. Whereas we are aware that FSU cannot do much to change that situation, we would like to ask you to consider a request that could help us ease the financial burden we are experiencing during these times.
We want FSU student apartment complexes to let students out of their leases early if they are no longer using them due to Covid-19. Campus has been shut down and many students are not able to work to pay their rent anymore. Many students have been urged to go home and now there is going to be a stay at home notice.
